Updated: Feb 15

Exploring Sustainable Candle Wax Options

In our previous discussion, we unveiled the surprising health implications of candle wax choices, particularly focusing on paraffin, soy, and beeswax. Today, we continue our exploration into the world of candle wax, shedding light on palm wax and its environmental impact, a topic that has been generating significant attention in recent years.

Palm Wax: A Dazzling, Yet Controversial Choice

Palm wax candles are undeniably enchanting, offering a crystalline, almost magical appearance that adds an elegant touch to any setting. However, beneath this captivating exterior lies a controversial story associated with palm oil production, the source of palm wax.

Environmental Concerns: A Rainforest Under Siege

Palm oil, which is hydrogenated to become palm wax, primarily hails from Southeast Asia. The process of obtaining palm oil has raised alarm bells due to its detrimental impact on rainforests, wildlife habitats, and the environment. Deforestation, often driven by the demand for palm oil, has emerged as a grave concern.

Consider these alarming statistics: Between 1967 and 2000, the area dedicated to palm oil cultivation in Indonesia skyrocketed from less than 2,000 square kilometers (770 square miles) to an astonishing 30,000 square kilometers. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) issued a sobering report in 2007, warning that if current trends persist, most of Indonesia's forests might be decimated by 2022.

"Deforestation in Indonesia for palm oil and illegal logging is so rapid that a report in 2007 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said most of the country’s forest might be destroyed by 2022." - The Economist, "The Other Oil Spill"

While palm wax itself can be alluring, the real issue lies in the challenge of determining whether a company's palm wax sourcing is environmentally responsible. Unfortunately, this remains a difficult task, as there are limited regulations and oversight mechanisms in place. As a result, palm wax is placed in a category that many conscientious businesses, including ours, may choose to avoid.

The Importance of Informed Candle Wax Choices

The candle-making industry is vast, offering a plethora of wax options, each with its unique characteristics, benefits, and drawbacks. As consumers, it's crucial to embark on a journey of exploration and research when selecting candle wax. In doing so, we can make educated choices that not only enhance our living spaces but also align with our values and the greater good of the environment.
